“Do the right thing. It will gratify some people and astonish the rest.” - Mark Twain

Several years ago, I was at the National Postal Forum (NPF) in Washington, DC. The NPF is my favorite conference and I’ve been attending shows every year since 1992. It’s a great opportunity to listen to postal executives and experts in the mailing industry. More importantly, I get to see the many friends I’ve met over the years.

On Tuesday evening, I jumped in a cab and headed to a dinner I was hosting for clients. We gathered in the bar while a table was prepared, and I introduced guests to each other. When the hostess announced they were ready to seat us, I reached into my pocket to shut off my cell phone. But – it wasn’t there!

“No matter how bad a situation, you have to ask yourself, ‘What do I do now?’” – Bob Howard, Medal of Honor Recipient

As we enter a new phase of the current crisis, our concerns continue to grow. While we adapt to new routines, the future remains uncertain. There’s no part of our lives that aren’t impacted by the virus.

The internet has become of source of both connectivity and divisiveness. We’ve watched videos of generations using webcams and software to close the “social distancing” gap. People offering suggestions and humor to cope with the boredom and exasperation. Others expressing their concerns and frustration, which have unintended consequences of provoking backlash and arguments.

“I like you just the way you are.” – Fred Rogers

I love action movies. I’ve seen Die Hard so many times, that I often quote the next line an actor is going to say before he says it. While director Christopher Nolan definitely captured the grittiness of Gotham City imagined by Bob Kane, his movies never would have been created without the imaginative Tim Burton’s Batman of 1989. And no actor takes as many punches as Harrison Ford does, whether he’s Indiana Jones, Jack Ryan or Dr. Richard Kimble.

The older gentleman entered the dining room with a beaming smile. Before he had a chance to sit down, the server asked, “How did your son do?” The enthusiastic response, “He made it with 6 minutes to spare!”

“You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” – Jane Goodall

Back in February, I wrote a blog post about my mother entitled, Take Heed of the Quiet Rebel. It was my annual tribute to my first teacher of life’s little lessons. I included stories of her accomplishments, including getting a college degree in 1948. The example of her life remains a guidepost for how I live my own.

A few weeks ago, I received a comment from Liz Baccala on the post. It was the sort of connection only possible in the age of the internet:

"Do your little bit of good where you are; it's those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world." - Desmond Tutu

A few years ago, my wife Dolores and I were on our way to a Boston Red Sox game. We’re both fans, and our friends, Kerry and Diane, had invited us as their guests. Good friends, beautiful summer weather, and the Red Sox. Who could ask for more?

The only less-than-enjoyable part would be driving to the game during rush hour. In Boston. On a Friday night. But we made good time. Until there was a slight backup.

“So goes discovery: unless you know your own ignorance, you won’t recognize when something truly novel is right before your eyes.” – Nick Pyenson

I don’t know anyone with fond memories of their adolescence. For most of us, it was a period of uncomfortable change. Our bodies transforming into young adults while struggling with new social structures and relationships. But we didn’t have a choice – we could only grow through change.

“There is no joy in possession without sharing.” – Erasmus

There’s so much work to be done.

We’re fortunate to live in a time with so much freedom and prosperity. Medical science has developed surgical techniques and drugs that can cure injuries and diseases that meant certain death just a generation ago. Most of us can access information on any topic at any time from almost anywhere. Technology has developed to the point where the “6 degrees of separation” has been reduced to only 4.
